Faculty: Will you mentor a new researcher?

Faculty are invited to mentor a novice undergraduate student in research as part of our Emerging Scholars Research Experience for Undergraduate Women. Research project proposals must actively engage students with computing and/or technology.

Mentors will receive $500 for their research accounts per mentee.

Program Details

  • Program begins October 4, 2021 and ends May 6, 2022.
  • Students receive 5 hours of research course credit for the entire program, which includes an undergraduate research methods class that meets in the spring.
  • Students participate in a Women’s Research Hackathon in February  2022.
  • Students compete in our April campus-wide Women's Research Poster Competition.
  • We recruit students with little or no prior research experience in an effort to spark their interest in these areas!

Mentor Requirements

  • Provide student with 8-10 hours of work/tasks per week on research project.
  • Meet regularly with your student and set weekly goals.
  • Work with student to complete her end of semester reports and support her research poster creation for the April competition.
  • Involve the student with creative or innovative use of technology or computing.
  • Maintain communication with your student regarding progress throughout the program.
  • Attend Fall REU Orientation for new faculty mentors, if applicable.
