UITS IT Training senior online training specialist
As UITS IT Training senior online training specialist, Jessica Samuel has faced many technology obstacles in her life. “Enough to know that where there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Samuel. “There will always be obstacles, but the key is not letting them stand in the way of what ultimately needs to be accomplished.”
Samuel applied that same mentality to furthering her education after graduating from IU with a degree in journalism and a concentration in business and entrepreneurship. “I felt like it was bit narrow of a focus compared to my interests, so I evolved that foundation into web and print design, then added content creation and management, and now online training and development,” she said.
A typical day for Samuel involves designing or delivering training about software and planning and troubleshooting technologies. The same thing that attracted Samuel to the field is the same thing that keeps her motivated: the desire to communicate clearly in a way that helps learners solve problems. “I love staying connected to the changing tech landscape,” she said.
Samuel has attended and presented at the past two Techie Women Have More… conferences and has volunteered as a mentor through CEWiT’s Job Shadow program for two years. She is proud of the ways she has been able to affect change and make lasting improvements in training and internal processes. “I’m also thrilled with the relationships and connections I’ve been fortunate to build,” said Samuel.
For those entering technical fields today, Samuel encourages candidates to apply for positions that involve some kind of stretch goal. “Expect to learn and grow on the job, and trust yourself to rise to the occasion,” she said. “When it comes to using tools in technical fields, practice makes perfect, and that’s OK. If there’s a technology or programming language that seems daunting, don’t be afraid to jump in and get your toes wet.”
