Tuesday, October 10, 2017
University Information Technology Services (UITS) will be hosting its annual Statewide IT conference this month, October 19 and 20. There will be preconference activities on the 18th and the event will officially kick off with a keynote speech from Shoshana Zuboff at the IU Auditorium on Thursdayay, October 19th.
Zuboff has devoted her career to studying the rise of the digital age, its organizational and social consequences and its relationship to the history and future of capitalism. She was one of the first women to be tenured at Harvard University Business School and has been named among the 11 most original business thinkers in the world by Strategy+Business, a management magazine for businesses around the globe. Her work has been featured in Business Week, The New York Times, NPR’s Marketplace and Morning Edition.
Zuboff’s most recent book, Master or Slave, which is slated to come out this November, integrates her main areas of interest: “the historical emergence of psychological individuality, the conditions for human development, the digital revolution, and the evolution of capitalism,” according to her website. Zuboff’s talk will be followed by a series of workshops and sessions held throughout the Indiana Memorial Union. Topics range from Will IT Kill the 4th Amendment? to a live demo of Denodo and will extend into the following Friday.
Also, for the first time, IU’s Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research will hold their own annual Cyber Security Summit alongside the Statewide IT event on the 19th, with different workshops offered as a break out track. These topics cover a wide range of topics, from the legal and ethical challenges of automation to information security principles. Friday’s breakout sessions will be followed with a staff appreciation celebration dinner in which all attending students, faculty and staff will be able to network and celebrate the achievements of 1IUIT.
The workshops will extend into Saturday and, finally, there will be a lunch celebrating this year’s conference and the 20th birthday of UITS.
