The Tech Toy Drive for Girls is an initiative dedicated to exposing and normalizing technology education in young girls and is requesting donations of toys and/or money this holiday season. The Toy Drive is a partnership between MC Tech Twins a social platform aimed at engaging and inspiring underrepresented minority women and girls that was founded by IU Kelley School of Business seniors Maya and Mica Caine, CEWiT, and Black Girl Affairs.
"Although Barbie's and baby dolls are great toys, these common gifts hinder young girls' becoming interested in technology and engineering," says Maya in the event's promotional video.
Can you help Tech Toy Drive for Girls reach their goal of supplying tech toys to at least 300 girls in the Bloomington and Indianapolis area this month?
1. Donate a tech toy.
A "tech toy" is described as a newly-purchased toy that "develops a child's technical and/or engineering skills," according to the event's Facebook page. "Tech Toys" are not just electronic toys, but rather, any toy that teaches or prompts a girl to actively participate in engineering or technical tasks.
The toys are intended for girls ages 3 to 10.
TheSuggested toys include the Fisher Price Think & Learn Code-a-Pillar Toy, Zoomer Zuppies, Kidz Delight Smooth Touch Smart Phone or VTech Doc McStuffins Talk and Trace Clipboard Toy for girls ages 3 to 5. For girls ages 6 to 10, they suggest Snap Circuits, a FlashForge 3D Printer, a WowWee MiP Robot or a K’NEX Mighty Makers Building Set. Finally, for girls ages 9 and older, they recommend toys like Boolean Girls, Conzo by Anki and Gikfun Mini Electronic Transparent Stereo Speaker Box DIY Kit Sount Amplifier.
The toys will be collected from now until December, 20 and toy dispersal will be held at three different locations in Indianapolis and on the Bloomington campus from December, 20 to 24.
To donate a tech toy, complete this form, then drop the toy off at the CEWiT House (501 N. Park Avenue, Bloomington, IN) Monday – Friday, from 9am to 4pm.
2. Make a monetary donation.
You can make a monetary donation by first completing this form, then sending money via this PayPal link. All donations must be received via PayPal; checks or money orders cannot be accepted. Donations of any amount will be accepted.
Once receiving payment through the PayPal account, we will email you a formal receipt. 100% of financial contributions go toward purchasing toys. However, because the Tech Toy Drive for Girls is not a registered 501 (c) 3 organization, donations NOT tax deductible.
3. Nominate a girl to receive a toy.
Nominate a girl between the ages of 3-10 years old in the Indianapolis/Bloomington area. Once you complete this form, Maya and Mica Caine will reach out to the parent/guardian of the young girl to move forward with the process. Their target demographic are young underrepresented minority girls whose family demonstrates a financial need.
The deadline for donations and nominations is December 22, 2017. For more information, visit the Tech Toy Drive for Girls’ Facebook page. Happy Holidays!
