Bloomington, Ind. – Dr. Kylie Peppler, associate professor of learning sciences in the School of Education at Indiana University Bloomington, was honored with the Tech Educator of the Year award at TechPoint’s 17th annual Mira Awards on Saturday, April 23.

Dr. Peppler was nominated by CEWiT’s Faculty Leadership Team, which she has been a part of for three years. She is also the Champion of the CEWiT Circles Program, and passionate about encouraging girls and women to work and study in STEM-related fields. Her nominators describe her as someone who works to understand the connection between arts and technology in attempt to deepen a child’s learning experience.

An artist by training, Dr. Peppler’s research at the intersection of media arts, new technologies and informal learning has led to three books in print and four co-authored books in press. Her research with e-textiles prompted her to develop Lilypond, an online community for designers to connect creators. Dr. Peppler has also received grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the National Science Foundation, among others.

According to TechPoint’s website, the Mira Awards judges have great admiration for Peppler’s commitment to volunteering in the STEM community. “Through her advocacy in the Maker Movement, she has created wearable computers and electronically enhanced puppets to educate children in grades K-3 about biological systems through stimulation.”

TechPoint works to promote and accelerate the growth of Indiana’s tech community, and honors the state’s success stories each year with the Mira Awards. 98 companies, organizations and individuals were selected as nominees and a total of 17 award winners and seven runner-ups were chosen.
